The best motorcycle riders from around the world swooped into Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California, in late July for the Red Bull U.S. MotoGP.

Austrailan Casey Stoner, riding for the factory Ducati Team, dominated the event from start to finish and took his sixth win of the year. Stoner eventually crossed the finish line about 10 seconds ahead of fellow countryman Chris Vermeulen, who rides for the Rizla Suzuki MotoGP team.

After the race, Stoner said, “This has to be my best racing weekend ever. Today, everything was perfect, the tires, the bike . . . everything was working great the whole weekend.”

On his second-place finish, Vermeulen said, “I’m absolutely over the moon to be on the podium here at Laguna. I couldn’t quite hang with Casey all the race, but I am very happy to be second."

Turning in one of the weekend's best performances was Italian Marco Melandri. Riding for the Honda Gresini team, Melandri started way back in the 10th position, but fought his way through the field to take third place at the checkered flag.

Rounding out the top five were 5-time World Champion Vaentino Rossi in fourth, and Dani Pedrosa in fifth.

Five riders from the United States started the race, but it was a race that most would like to forget. Current world champion Nicky Hayden started from fourth position but collided with fellow American John Hopkins a few corners after the start. “It’s a pity to get such a bad result in my country's  race," said Hayden who retired 10 laps from the end. The best finishing American was wildcard rider Roger Lee Hayden (Nicky’s brother) who finished in 10th.

The attendance for this year's race topped 143,000.
